Weekly Newsletter #44 · October 06, 2026

5th Square Advocacy is an urbanist organization of grassroots advocates building a coalition for better transportation, housing, and public space in Philadelphia. Thanks to our growing network of sustaining members for making this work possible.

✍️ TRANSIT POSTCARD WRITING HAPPY HOUR

Next Tuesday, 10/13, join us at Dock Street Brewery South for an informal event writing postcards in support of a Transit Access Fund for Philadelphia!

We will provide the cards, stamps, and pens. Just bring your stories!

Drop in anytime and stay as long or as short as you want! All ages are welcome to this event!

Transit Postcard Happy Hour
Dock Street Brewery South, 2118 Washington Ave
Tuesday, October 13th, 6 PM - 8 PM

🛠️ FIX THE SOUTH ST BRIDGE

The South Street Bridge is the most biked on bridge in all of PA, but bicyclists keep getting hit while riding in the bridge's bike lane.

Such a well-used bike lane deserves safer infrastructure ASAP! We're joining Philly Bike Action's call to protect the bike lane with jersey barriers, and eliminate the dangerous mixing zone by adding a dedicated bike signal.

Tell the city:  Fix the bike lane on South St Bridge!

⏮️ CITYNERD LIVE RECAPPED

Last week, more than 500 of you joined us for  the urbanist event of the season, CityNerd Live in Philly: The City’s Scorecard.

We hosted CityNerd Ray Delahanty for a live show discussing what Philadelphia gets right and wrong when it comes to transit, walkability, and affordability.

Thank you so much to Ray for coming out to our city, our volunteers who worked hard to host the event, and everyone who joined us and bought a ticket. The money we raised from ticket sales will go directly to funding our advocacy for a better Philadelphia.

🚘 SPEED CAMERAS SAVE LIVES

Check out this op-ed in Philly Mag by Families for Safe Streets member Angela McDonald and State Rep. Tarik Khan:  Crack Down on Flock Cameras. Expand Speed Cameras

It's a great article that explains why speed cameras are so important, as well as the strict rules around their use that differentiate them from Flock cameras.

If you support speed cameras, take action here to help us push back against Council Bill 260699 which would weaken our city's lifesaving speed camera program.

🌳 CENTER CITY OPEN STREETS

Center City District's West Walnut Open Streets is back for the fall.

Check it out, and see how great Center City can be when we put people first.

🗞️ 5TH SQUARE IN THE NEWS

The Times Herald / RDC hosts Fifth Square advocacy meetup

The Roxborough Development Corporation recently hosted the fifth NW Fifth Square Meet Up in the Pocket giving Philly advocates, activists, and interested neighbors a chance to come together and talk about the future of the city.

With representatives from several organizations promoting positive change through elected officials and grassroots activism, the low key meet up provided an opportunity to interact with those on the front lines of public advocacy.
