๐Ÿซ Universal Student Fares / ๐Ÿ“š Life After Cars Book Talk / ๐ŸŒณ Shape Our Future Trail Network

March 20, 2026
Weekly Newsletter #17 · March 20, 2026

5th Square Advocacy is an urbanist organization of grassroots advocates building a coalition for better transportation, housing, and public space in Philadelphia. Thanks to our growing network of sustaining members for making this work possible.

๐Ÿซ UNIVERSAL STUDENT FARES

We're working with Transit Forward Philadelphia to push for universal student fares and want to hear from students, teachers and family members-- share your support for universal student fares here.

Current student fare cards don't do enough to meet the needs of Philadelphia students.

While the School District of Philadelphia incentivizes parents to drive their kids to school with generous subsidies, we think we can do more for students who take SEPTA.

๐ŸŒณ SHAPE OUR FUTURE TRAIL NETWORK

The City is working on a new Trail Master Plan and they're looking for your feedback! They want to know how you use trails and how you think the existing trail network can be improved.

Take their survey here!

They're also hiring Trail Ambassadors-- apply here!

Ambassadors will receive a $600 stipend and will have the chance to influence priorities, messaging, and recommendations in the Trail Master Plan.

๐Ÿ™๏ธ MORE OPEN STREETS

Center City District's West Walnut Open Streets are coming back!

On Sundays from April 5th to May 17th, portions of Walnut and 18th Streets in the Rittenhouse area will be car-free from 10am to 5pm.

๐Ÿšฒ TOMORROW: POP-UP PROTECTED BIKE LANE

More than a year and a half after Dr. Barbara Friedes was tragically killed by a drunk driver while biking in the Spruce Street bike lane, there is still no concrete protection .

Pop-Up Protected Bike Lane

Join Philly Bike Action tomorrow on March 21st at 9am for a demonstration to show how concrete protected bike lanes would look and function on Spruce and Pine Streets. Coffee and donuts will be provided.
