5th Square Advocacy is an urbanist organization of grassroots advocates building a coalition for better transportation, land use, and public space policies. Our work is made possible through the support of a growing network of sustaining members .

๐ŸŽ‰ FRIDAY: HOLIDAY PARTY

This Friday, December 12th, join us for  our holiday party and awards ceremony!

Celebrate with other Philadelphia built environment activists, neighborhood and community leaders, architects, planners, builders, and sustainability advocates at the urbanist holiday party of the season!

๐Ÿš‹ SPEED UP DIVERTED TROLLEYS

Since mid-November 2025, West Philly Trolleys are diverting to 40th and Market due to overhead wire problems in the tunnel.

These trolleys are frequently stuck in University City traffic, especially on Spruce, 38th, and 40th Streets – delaying over 30,000 daily riders.

There are up to 10 times more trolley riders than cars using these streets!

SIGN HERE to tell the City & SEPTA to prioritize riders during EVERY extended trolley diversion and;

  • Create temporary transitways on Spruce, 38th, and 40th Streets
  • Divert vehicle traffic during rush hours & restrict parking
  • Give traffic-signal priority to SEPTA vehicles
  • Provide shelter and benches for waiting riders, especially at 40th & Market
  • Improve bus frequencies in affected areas

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ SUPPORT OUTDOOR DINING

We love our city's streeteries, but unfortunately extensive red tape makes it difficult and expensive for a restaurant to offer outdoor dining.

You can help change that by coming to City Hall on Thursday, December 11th to speak in support of expanding outdoor dining in Philly.

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ HOME PLAN

We are excited to see the HOME plan put a focus on housing investment and policy change and we have some thoughts to share about how the plan can be made even better.

See here for our full statement, but the highlights are:

  • Create a fast-track for affordable housing permits
  • Loosen restrictions around SROs, ADUs, and smaller infill projects
  • Encourage transit-oriented communities through zoning reform
  • Create a stronger right for tenants to pursue fair rents and housing improvements
  • Provide housing opportunities in all neighborhoods of the city

๐Ÿ‘‹ BECOME A MEMBER

Thank you so much to those of you who have already joined 5th Square Advocacy as a member!

Our members support our grassroots work for a more accessible, sustainable, and equitable Philadelphia. Will you join us?

As a reminder, 5th Square Advocacy is a new, separate organization from 5th Square PAC which will focus on election-related activities while 5th Square Advocacy will be the new home for our issue advocacy and legislative efforts going forward. Should you have to choose which organization to support with your membership, we highly recommend choosing 5th Square Advocacy.

๐Ÿšจ  ACTION ITEMS

๐Ÿ™๏ธ Philly2050 Survey

The Philadelphia City Planning Commission is looking to hear from you about what you want for the future of the city. We encourage you to respond in support of key urbanist issues like transit-oriented housing, walkable neighborhoods, expansion of transit options, protected bike lanes, and more.

๐Ÿš‰ Support the Transit Access Fund

Transit Forward Philly is fighting for a Transit Access Fund to reduce financial barriers for low-income SEPTA riders. In addition to increasing ridership, the Transit Access Fund would help stabilize SEPTA's finances and protect riders from service cuts. Sign their petition here and share your story in support of it here.

๐Ÿšฒ Parking-Protected Bike Lane Petition

Parking-protected bike lanes are a great way to make our bikes lanes safer and lower stress, but they are illegal in PA! The Bicycle Coalition is fighting for their legalization. Sign their petition to show your support for safer bike lanes!
